Congress gave the green light to the most aggressive fiscal package in years. Cigarettes will go from 160% to 200% tax, meaning a 20-unit box will have $17.03 pesos in fixed fee alone, plus the percentage on the final price. By 2030, each cigarette will pay more than one weight of tax.
🥤 Soft drinks and sugary drinks will double their tax: from $1.64 to $3.08 pesos per liter, an increase of 87%. This includes light sodas, drinks with sweeteners, powders and syrups. Mexico consumes 166 liters per capita per year, one of the highest in the world.
🎮 For the first time in history, video games with violent content will pay 8% special tax. This applies to physical, digital sales, downloads, memberships and on-platform purchases. The SAT will be able to block access to non-compliant platforms.
🎰 Gambling and sweepstakes will jump from 30% to 50% tax, both on physical casinos and digital platforms. They also go up:
- Products with nicotine: 100% increase
- Tourist permits: from $294 to $983
- Entrance to Chichén Itza: from $80 to $104 pesos
- Zoo health certificates: $899 pesos
The tax office expects to raise an additional 42 billion pesos with these measures. The government argues it seeks to "promote healthier habits," though critics point out that resources are not labeled for health and that it will be consumers who absorb these increases, not big companies.
