As protesters in Nepal stormed into parliament this week, forcing the prime minister to resign, luxury hotels and residences were attacked by arsonists amid growing anger over the lavish lifestyles of the elite in one of the world’s poorest countries.
The demonstrations, commonly referred to as the “Gen Z protests,” were driven largely by young people in their teens and twenties. They have triggered the worst unrest Nepal has seen in years, culminating in the resignation of the unpopular leader, KP Sharma Oli, on Tuesday, September 9, just a day after 19 protesters were killed in violent clashes.
