Mexican Government Continues Investigation After Gas Truck Explosion Raises Death Toll to 8

City officials reported that a gas truck explosion triggered a massive fire on a highway in southeastern Mexico City on Wednesday, September 10, killing at least eight people and injuring 94 others. Authorities said 28 of the injured remain in critical condition.

The accident occurred when the gas truck overturned and exploded on a highway near the border between Iztapalapa and Chalco, on the outskirts of Mexico City. Firefighters quickly responded to contain the blaze.

At a press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described the incident as a “tragic disaster” and stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the cause in order to prevent future accidents.

Sheinbaum added that the company responsible has confirmed its insurance coverage is in order and pledged support for the victims. The explosion has heightened concerns about industrial safety and emergency preparedness in Mexico’s densely populated urban areas.
