At least 51 people have been killed during anti-corruption protests in Nepal this week, police spokesman Binod Ghimire confirmed on Friday, September 12, 2025. Among the dead are at least 21 protesters, most of whom were killed on the first day of demonstrations, September 8, when police cracked down on crowds opposing the government’s ban on social media, corruption, and poor governance. The fatalities also include several escaped prisoners and three police officers.
The unrest created an opportunity for over 13,500 inmates to break free from prisons across the country. Only a small number have been recaptured, leaving more than 12,500 prisoners still at large. Police said some escapees died during or after their jailbreaks in clashes with Nepalese security forces.
On Friday, the Nepalese army reported it had recovered more than 100 firearms that were stolen amid the chaos.
