World Humanoid Robot Games Kick Off in Beijing

Beijing welcomed the opening of the World Humanoid Robot Games on Thursday, an international sporting event that showcases human-shaped robots in action.

Organized by the municipal government and other partners, the competition highlights China’s ambition to accelerate advancements in humanoid robotics.

Robots built by companies and student teams from 16 countries — including Japan — took part in the lively opening ceremony. A Beijing-made robot took center stage, declaring on behalf of the contestants that they would “compete for the future” by blending human spirit with scientific and technological innovation.

Early exhibition matches drew laughter from the audience, particularly during a soccer game where robots stumbled, crashed into one another, and had to be carried off the field.

The official contests begin Friday, featuring more than 500 robots competing across 26 disciplines, from athletics and martial arts to dancing and team sports.

China has set its sights on becoming a global leader in humanoid robotics, with a government target to reach world-class standards by 2027.
