Military forces from Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a tense standoff on Thursday (July 24), escalating a decades-long border dispute rooted in historical rivalries and complicated by modern political dynasties.
Both nations traded blame for triggering the latest violence. Thai officials reported civilian casualties and the evacuation of tens of thousands from affected areas, while Cambodia condemned Thailand’s actions as “brutal, barbaric, and violent.” Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene and halt what he described as Thai aggression.
In response, Thailand shut down all official border crossings. A spokesperson for its defense ministry stated that Thai soldiers had no choice but to return fire after Cambodian troops allegedly launched attacks near Surin province.
