U.S. police hunt gunman after Trump ally is shot dead.

U.S. police are hunting for the gunman after Charlie Kirk, a well-known right-wing activist, political commentator, and a key ally of President Donald Trump, was shot dead in the neck on Wednesday (September 10) during an event at Utah State University, in what the state’s governor described as a “political assassination.”

As of Wednesday evening (U.S. time), nearly six hours after the shooting, authorities had not yet publicly identified the suspect. FBI Director Kash Patel said that an unnamed “person of interest” had been detained for questioning but was later released as the investigation continues.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed police were questioning individuals connected to the incident but did not provide further details. The state’s Department of Public Safety Commissioner added that the shooter remains “at large.”

Footage of the attack, shared online, shows 31-year-old Kirk speaking to a crowd outside Utah Valley University in Orem around 12:20 p.m. local time when gunshots rang out. Kirk immediately clutched his neck and collapsed from his chair as panicked attendees fled. Another video shows blood flowing from Kirk’s neck moments after the shooting.

Authorities believe the gunman likely fired from the rooftop of a distant building while about 3,000 people were gathered at the event.

Former President Donald Trump expressed sorrow and grief, vowing to bring the attacker to justice. He also ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday in honor of Kirk.
