Tens of Thousands Protest in Brazil Against Controversial Amnesty Bill

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Brazilians marched through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília to protest a controversial bill in Congress that would grant amnesty to lawmakers and reduce penalties for those involved in the January 8, 2023, attacks on government buildings.

Artists, students, and activists joined the demonstrations, chanting slogans such as “No Amnesty” while carrying banners condemning the proposed legislation. In Rio, singer Caetano Veloso performed before a crowd of more than 40,000 people on Copacabana Beach, declaring: “The Brazilian people voted for Lula. So why is our democracy being forced to endure this?”

The event, described as a “musical protest,” evoked memories of Brazil’s historic marches against dictatorship, featuring performances by renowned musicians Gilberto Gil and Chico Buarque.

The demonstrations were organized by leftist movements along with groups of artists and activists, spreading to at least 22 state capitals across the country, including São Paulo and Brasília.
