President Donald J. Trump Encourage Europe to stop import oil from Russia

US President Donald Trump on September 5 urged European leaders to stop buying oil from Russia. The remarks came during a conversation with European leaders who discussed helping to ensure the security of Ukraine during a ceasefire.

Oil and natural gas are a major source of revenue for Russia, which it diverts into its arms industry to continue its war with Ukraine. In response, US President Donald Trump told European leaders they must stop buying oil and gas from Russia, which he believes is helping Moscow wage war against Ukraine.

Trump made the remarks during a telephone conversation with the “Coalition of the Willing” group of countries led by French President Emmanuel Macron on Ukraine’s security.

According to a White House official, President Trump stressed that Europe must stop buying oil from Russia, which is funding Russia’s war, because Russia earns more than $1.2 billion a year from selling oil to the European Union. According to Reuters news agency.

The European Commission has proposed legislation to phase out EU oil and gas imports from Russia by January 1, 2028, after the EU has relied on Russian energy for years. Most European countries have already stopped importing Russian crude oil by 2022 and Russian fuel by 2023.

Trump has also urged the EU to put pressure on China, which buys a lot of Russian crude oil to boost its economy. Trump has raised tariffs on Indian goods by up to 50 percent, citing its purchases of Russian crude.

Trump has also called for Europe to take on more of its own defense spending, to 5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP), as the war in Ukraine continues.
