Anutin sworn in as Thailand's new prime minister after royal assent

(Bangkok): Anutin Charnvirakul took office as Thailand's 32nd prime minister on Sunday, September 7, after receiving royal assent, AFP news agency reported.

"The King has approved Anutin's appointment as prime minister from now on," said Arpath Sukhanunth, secretary-general of the Thai National Assembly, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Anutin's Phum Chai Thai party in Bangkok.

Anutin, 58, has previously served as deputy prime minister, interior minister and health minister. He becomes Thailand's third prime minister in more than two years after Paetongtarn Shinawatra was ousted by the Constitutional Court. But Anutin's victory was made possible by the support of the Thai People's Party, which has set a condition for him to dissolve parliament within four months to hold early elections.
