Nepal has plunged into turmoil following the government’s decision to enforce a sweeping ban on social media, widely seen as an attempt to stifle dissent. The crackdown, set against worsening economic conditions and growing frustration among the youth, sparked massive demonstrations in Kathmandu, driven largely by Generation Z.
The unrest culminated in the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli yesterday after violent clashes left at least 19 protesters dead. Crowds set fire to parliament, government offices, and politicians’ residences, marking one of the country’s deepest crises in recent years.
The upheaval mirrors youth-led revolts in Sri Lanka (2022) and Bangladesh (2024), highlighting the fragility of smaller South Asian democracies and raising urgent concerns about the state of free expression across the region.
