Mbappe Says Life in Madrid Feels “More Relaxed” as He Prepares for France’s World Cup Qualifiers

MADRID / PARIS — France captain Kylian Mbappé says he feels “more relaxed” and happier with his new life in Madrid than he did in Paris, as he gears up for France’s upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches.

Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last season, confirmed he will be fit and ready to represent his country in the next two fixtures.

“The coach wants me to play. I don’t think there will be a major problem,” Mbappé said on Thursday, addressing concerns over his ankle.

France manager Didier Deschamps also appeared optimistic, saying, “It’s not prohibitive; it depends more on his sensitivity regarding his ankle.”

Les Bleus — two-time world champions — are set to face Azerbaijan in Paris on Friday before travelling to play Iceland on Monday.

Mbappé, 26, recently received treatment for a minor issue in his right ankle picked up during Real Madrid’s last league game. Despite that, he says he’s in great shape — both physically and mentally — since settling in the Spanish capital.

“A career can have some slightly more complicated years, with a bit more hardship,” he admitted. “But I’ve adapted well to Madrid. It’s not an attack on France, but I do feel more relaxed there. Life in Madrid is less hectic than in Paris.”

The forward added that he’s enjoying his football again:

“I’ve managed to score goals, and I’m in a good mood on the pitch — though I know I can still do better.”

Deschamps, meanwhile, cautioned his squad not to underestimate Azerbaijan, who recently held Ukraine to a draw.

“They’re not among Europe’s top sides, but seven of their players play for Qarabag, and that team has won its first two Champions League pool matches,” the coach noted.

France currently sit top of their qualifying group, with two wins from two matches, as they aim to secure an early path to the 2026 World Cup.
