✈️ Techo International Airport — Key Facts & Updates

Location & Size: Techo International Airport (KTI) is in Kandal Stueng District, Kandal Province, about 20-30 km south of Phnom Penh. It spans ~2,600 hectares.
Operational Status: Phase 1 became operational on September 9, 2025, replacing Phnom Penh International Airport for commercial flights. 
Capacity: Initially it can handle about 13 million passengers per year. Plans are in place to expand capacity to 30 million by 2030 and up to 50 million by 2050 through further phases.

🏗️ Design, Features & Operations

Classification & Infrastructure: It is a Class 4F international airport with multiple runways, designed to accommodate large long-range aircraft like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. 
Operator & Ownership: Built through a public-private partnership. The Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) owns 90% and the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation owns 10%. Operations are handled by Cambodia Airports (part of VINCI Airports).
Sustainability & Design: The airport was designed by Foster & Partners. It includes green features (vertical gardens, rooftop greenery, native plants), use of natural light, and infrastructure to enhance environmental sustainability.

⚠️ Impacts & Backdrop

Replacement of Old Airport: Phnom Penh International Airport was closed to commercial flights as Techo opened, though the former airport will still serve military, private, and emergency use.
Strategic Goal: The airport is part of Cambodia’s broader strategy to boost tourism, improve air connectivity, and support economic growth.
